Europa Point is located at the southern tip of Gibraltar and is under 16 miles away from Africa\’s coast.
On a clear day, that it\’s most days, you\’ll be able to see Jebel Sidi Musa the \’other\’ pillar of Hercules (the pillar of Hercules in Gibraltar can be seen when visiting the Rock). The Gibraltar Bus Company Route 2 bus from the Market Place stops here and if you get an all day ticket you can get off the bus and jump on the next one as it leaves, once those very important photo\’s are taken.
There is a small museum at Europa Point where you can learn some of the history of the area as well as it’s strategic importance over the years. There is a cafe serving hot food, drinks and ice creams, as well as excellent toilet facilities, tourist information and a large, safe children’s outdoor play area.
The lighthouse at Europa Point was completed in 1841 and is the sole lighthouse outside of the UK that\’s administered by Trinity House, the authority that looks after all lighthouses in the United Kingdom and Channel Islands.
Additionally there is a very impressive mosque which was built in the middle 1990\’s with a donation given by King Fahd of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In essence, the Mosque is the first building you see in continental Europe when crossing from Islamic Africa.
As well as the Moszue, Europa point has a church and also the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe that is not any typical church. The initial building stood presumably from before 1309 and has undergone several changes and uses as a result of war and sieges. The tower of the church used to be the original lighthouse at Europa Point and the church itself has been the positioning of miracles and worship since those early times with pilgrimages to visit the traditional sculpture of Our Lady of Europe.
Europa Point is located in the south of Gibraltar and is definitely best accessed by bus (see below). If you have a car there is a large free car park at Europa Point which always has spaces.
You can catch Bus 2 which will drop you off at Europa Point, it is the last stop on the route and the first stop on the journey back.
